Do you ever want to stop time? If you’re anything like me, you do. Kids arrive in your life and immediately start to grow and change with each passing day. Your parents, siblings, and friends — even your employees or clients — grow and change in their own ways. The days can feel so long, but the years are so short. Right? The most important moments can be so big, or so very small. Big or small, they’re always fleeting. How can we stop time?
As a mom, I especially get it. In fact, I cultivated my documentary-style approach to photography in my own life, just desperately trying to slow down long enough to create a record of our family’s various stages and changes. Nothing is more priceless to me than documenting what I call “heirloom moments.”
Photographing heirloom Moments
Heirloom, noun. A family possession handed down from generation to generation.
Moment, noun. An indefinitely short period of time; an instant. The present time or any other definite period or stage, as in a course of events. Importance or consequence. A particular time or period of success, excellence, fame, etc.
To me, heirloom moments are pictures that contain stories that you want to preserve and cherish— a single story or a multitude. Always beautiful but perhaps also complex or hilarious or free-spirited or poignant. Always fleeting. Always revealing the art hidden inside of the everyday.
